Impact of Extreme Temperatures on Your Car’s Battery

Our team at Guzik Motor Sales Inc. wants to ensure you’re up to speed when it comes to caring for your current vehicle or in preparation for your next vehicle. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just cold winters that kill vehicle batteries. Summer heat can also do your battery in. Designed to work across a broad range of temperatures, lead-acid batteries’ performance is impacted by extreme cold and heat. Studies reveal their capacity drops 20% in freezing conditions, up to 50% at -22 degrees.

While it’s true that high temperatures can increase battery capacity, it’s not without penalty. Lead-acid batteries can experience a 12% increase in capacity at a high of 122 degrees as opposed to 77 degrees. However, the exposure to higher temperatures shortens the battery’s life.
